In 1981, Livonia Rotary began participating in a Rotary International program known as Youth Exchange. Since that time our club has hosted one or more students per year from a foreign country and have sent one or more to another country.
Our club–with the obvious help of dozens of local host families has proudly sponsored “inbound” students from the following countries (listed alphabetically): Belgium, Brazil, France, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, and Sweden.
Over that same period, our club has aided in the exchange of a large number of “outbound” students from Livonia Central School. These graduating seniors (and on one occasion, a junior) have spent a year abroad in one of these countries: Austria, Brazil, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden, and Thailand.
This very rewarding program enables American students to live abroad with up to three different host families under the sponsorship and careful supervision of a fellow Rotary club. Room and board are 100% covered by the host families and the students are given a monthly stipend of approximately $100. They must attend school while abroad but this is again paid in full by the host Rotary club.
